Did you know Spacecraft are blasted into space by powerful rockets? And once the rocket has used up its fuel, the spacecraft carries on under its own power!
The first living thing to travel to space was a dog named Laika, in 1957 as you can see from the picture of the dog, named Laika.
The first person in space was The Russian Astronaut, Yuri Gagarin, on April12,1961. He circled the Earth once.
His space flight lasted 15 minutes. Astronauts today live and work in space, sometimes for months on end. Because there is so little gravity in space, everything ina a spacecraft floats, including the astronauts.
